TOKYOSupplementation with a glucopolysaccharide (GPS) from bakers yeast may improve mood and emotional states in adults under stress, according to a Japanese study (Biotherapy. 2010;24(3):255-59). Researchers from Nippon Biothera Co. worked with colleagues at the Fuchu Renal Disease Clinic Shinshikai Medical Corp. to examine the impact of supplementation with GPS (as Wellmune® WGP, from Biothera) on mood and emotional states in 16 staffers who appeared to suffer from stress, according to the Profile of Mood States (POMS). Subjects took 125 mg (one capsule) every morning before breakfast for 30 days.

At the studys completion, mean values of total mood disturbance (TMD) and all negative factor scores except vigor were significantly decreased compared to baseline. In addition, scores for TMD, depression-dejection, anger-hostility and fatigue were significantly decreased.

The results are consistent with the data of five clinical studies Biothera has conducted with Wellmune WGP in the United States," said Richard Mueller, president of Biotheras Healthcare Group. The body of research supporting Wellmune WGP demonstrates that this unique ingredient naturally enhances the immune system to protect against potentially harmful effects of physical and psychological stress."
