DSHEA wasn't strictly enforced for 10 years after it passed, which led to safety concerns and industry questions about requirements, according to Jon Benninger, vice president Informa Markets health and nutrition network. Unfortunately, this spurred many companies to not follow good manufacturing practices (GMPs) or responsible marketing practices. However, with FDA's increased focus on the supplement industry in recent years, supplement brand owners have been correcting the mistakes of the past and providing the safe, efficacious products encouraged by DSHEA.
