The finalists for best new ingredients in the three categories of aging, performance and women’s health have been announced.

The three finalists in the three categories – nine in all – will be decided by a panel of industry judges with expertise in formulations, marketing and regulatory at SupplySide West on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at the SupplySide Stage, on the show floor at booth #5764.

For the fourth year running, this juried competition features three health conditions with three finalists that have been culled by a team of SupplySide Supplement Journal editors. This year featured more than 50 total companies that nominated their new ingredients.

The contest at SupplySide West is a raucous event, not least because it also features a People’s Choice Award winner that is decided based on which ingredient receives the loudest round of applause and cheering.

The competition format is akin to a television game show, emcee’d by SupplySide Supplement Journal content director Todd Runestad. The three judges are David Foreman, R.Ph., aka The Herbal Pharmacist; Douglas Lynch, CEO of MarketWell Nutrition; and Diana Morgan, impresario of What’s Up With Supps and VP of global regulatory and government affairs for Nutrabolt.

Each contestant gets three minutes to pitch the attributes for the ingredient, based on the metrics of innovation, science and market potential. The judges will then pepper the contestant with questions for another three minutes. Then the judges will take a minute to confer and decide the winner. During that minute, the assembled audience will be asked to cheer for which ingredient they thought was best in class.

“It’s a fun way to both learn about new ingredients as well as be involved in the judging for which you think is best,” said Runestad. “Listen up for the hooping and hollering on Wednesday and come on over to join in the fun at the SupplySide Stage. Ingredient Idol is fun for all.”
