AHPA, NPIcenter Launch NDI Database

SILVER SPRING, Md. & MISSISSAUGA, OntarioInearly December, the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) and NPIcenterjointly launched the AHPA NDI Database, a searchable online resource linked toall notifications the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received for newdietary ingredients (NDIs). The database can be searched by product or companynames, and provides an outcome statement with the FDA response.

New ingredients are key to the supplement industrysfuture and the AHPA NDI Database will be a valuable resource for firms that arefiling the required notification prior to marketing an NDI, said Michael McGuffin, president of AHPA (www.ahpa.org). Byaccessing and reviewing other relevant NDI notifications, companies will bebetter prepared to file complete submissions and thereby prevent delays tomarket entry.

FDA has posted almost 300 NDI notifications on its docketssince the passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) in1994. The new database includes these notifications and will be updated withfuture filings and responses as they are available. Usage rates depend on AHPAmember status; further information is available at http://ndi.npicenter.com.
