GE DNA Found in Traditional Seeds

WASHINGTON--Genetically engineered (GE) DNA was found in the seeds oftraditional (non-GE) varieties of corn, soybeans and canola, according to astudy conducted by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS; www.ucsusa.org).The report, Gone to Seed: Transgenic Contaminants in the Traditional SeedSupply, is the first study by UCS to examine systematically whether GE cropvarieties have contaminated the seed supply of non-GE varieties, according toUCS.

On average, GE DNA was found in 50 percent of the corn, 50 percent of thesoybean and 83 percent of the canola seed varieties tested. Most of thespecific DNA sequences for which the laboratories tested are found in populartransgenic crop varieties currently allowed on the U.S. market, wrote thereports authors.
