GMA Asks FDA to Define Low-Carb

WASHINGTONThe GroceryManufacturers of America (GMA) (www.gmabrands.com) reported that, as part of itsnew initiative to combat obesity, it plans to file a citizens petition inearly 2004 to ask the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to define whatconstitutes a low-carb food. According to Alison Kretser, R.D., directorof scientific and nutrition policy, in order to help consumers make healthierchoices, food companies must be able to communicate the benefits of theirproducts through labeling, advertising and consumer outreach efforts.
