The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has stated its desire to have Congress modernize dietary supplement regulation by imposing a mandatory product listing (MPL) requirement. The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) also has interest in potential regulatory modernization, provided that such change actually benefits consumers. The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994 struck a balance between informed consumer access and appropriate FDA authority. Now, changes need to be made in order to advance health with education and access to dietary supplements. Informa’s Jon Benninger and AHPA President Michael McGuffin discuss the FDA’s request for MPL and regulatory modernizations that AHPA contends will better serve consumers.
