Astaxanthin May Relieve Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, RheumatoidArthritis Pain

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii--Cyanotech Corp. announced results from adouble blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of its BioAstin naturalastaxanthin for reducing the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Results of thetrial are being prepared for publication. Patients in the study who usedBioAstin reported a reduction in both the severity and duration of pain,according to the company (www.cyanotech.com).In July 2001, Cyanotech was awarded a U.S. patent (#6,258,855) titled Methodof Retarding and Ameliorating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

In related company news, BioAstin was shown in a clinical trial to reducepain and improve physical performance in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Thedouble blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted by the Health Research andStudies Center in Los Altos, Calif., and results will be presented in SanAntonio, Texas, at the American College of Nutrition scientific meeting inOctober.
