UC-II Reduces Arthritis Symptoms

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky.Undenaturedtype II collagen (as InterHealth Nutraceuticals UC-II) significantlyreduced pain and lameness associated with arthritis in a four-month dog studyconducted at Murray State University Veterinary College.

Arthritic, large breed dogs were divided into three groups. The control group received no supplementation, group 1received 1 mg/d of UC-II, and group 2 received 10 mg/d of UCII (equivalent tothe recommended human dosage). Animals given UC-II showed a marked decline inpain and lameness following physical exertion. The 10 mg dose was the mosteffective. Neither dose produced any side effects or changes in serum chemistry. The study also showed UC-II combined with glucosamine and chondroitin sulfateprovided significantly better results than glucosamine plus chondroitin sulfatealone, suggesting a formulation of these ingredients could provide enhancedbenefits to joint health sufferers.

This study provides strong evidence that UC-II can providesignificant help for those suffering from joint health problems, said Ramesh Gupta, Ph.D., head researcher. It also showsthat UC-II can significantly enhance the effects of glucosamine plus chondroitinsulfate in arthritis sufferers.

Results of the study were presented at the 44th annual meetingof the Society of Toxicology in New Orleans. The study, entitled Efficacy andSafety of Glycosylated Undenatured Type II Collagen (UC-II) in Therapy ofArthritic Dogs, has also been accepted for publication in the Journalof Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutic (www.blackwellpublishing.com/journal.asp?ref=0140-7783).
