Americans Grocery Shop on Sundays

NEW YORKMost Americans spend their Sundays shopping for groceries, planning for the week ahead and preparing meals at home, according to an article in Supermarket News. The publication noted a new survey by Parade Magazine found 72 percent of Americans say they shop for groceries on Sunday, and 89 percent said they cook or prepare a meal on Sunday.

Of those who eat at home on Sunday, 91 percent said they prepare breakfast at home, and 86 percent said they prepare dinner at home. More than half (59 percent) said they are likely to entertain guests in their home on Sunday.

Women are more likely to cook than men (94 percent vs. 83 percent), but men are just as likely to grocery shop (70 percent vs. 74 percent).

Americans are also planning ahead on Sundays, with 73 percent saying they use the day to decide what grocery items to buy in the week ahead. Of the 72 percent who read the Sunday newspaper, 94 percent look for information about sales, and 92 percent rely on the paper for coupons.

Supermarket News reported the 2010 Sunday in America survey was conducted in October 2009 by Mori Resarch among a nationwide sample of 1,266 respondents.
