WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.In a new report, ConsumerLab.com reviewed 22 eye health products with lutein and zeaxanthin for claims and quality. The review, "Vision Supplements with Lutein and Zeaxanthin," evaluated the formulations' dosages, costs and other quality criteria. Of the 22 products, 11 passed testing in Consumerlab.com's Voluntary Certification Program. The site reviewed an additional 10 products, finding amounts of lutein ranged from 4 to 45 mg, and supplements cost between $0.12 to $1.10 a day.

The evidence shows that some supplements may help improve vision in people with macular degeneration and others can slow its progression," said Tod Cooperman, M.D., president of Consumerlab.com. The problem for a consumer is knowing if he or she should be taking a vision supplement and, if so, which one contains the correct dosage and combination of ingredientsand at the best price."

In August, the independent company reviewed 68 omega-3 supplements, with 11 failing due to contamination, label or other issues.
