September 11, 2013
PARISAuthorities have arrested eight managers of a company that is embroiled in a horse meat scandal, The Wall Street Journal and other media reported.
The managers were detained as authorities investigate their employer, Spanghero, which has been accused of selling horse meat that was mislabeled as beef. The company filed for bankruptcy over the summer; but it has reopened with new management under the name La Lauragaise, according to news reports.
The probe includes an investigation into possible violations of public health and environmental regulations.
Others have been arrested in the horse meat scandal as well, including two men in London who are suspected of conspiracy to defraud, the Journal reported. The newspaper said two men in Wales and one man in Yorkshire also were arrested in February.
In a report published in July, a committee appointed by UK's House of Commons noted evidence suggested the scandal was tainted by fraud. The scandal came to light early this year after health officials discovered horse meat labeled as beef in Ireland.
