MORRIS PLAIN, N.J. BENEO, Cosucra and Sensus jointly filed a dossier for an EU article 13.5 claim linking oligofructose and improved blood glucose response after intake. The submission includes multiple studies establishing oligofructose's role in glycemic control.

Derived from chicory, the prebiotic fiber oligofructose can replace sugar in various food applications. The ingredient is not digested in humans, as opposed to glucose and fructose, which are released into the blood stream.

According to new proprietary research by the three companies, replacing some sugar with oligofructose positively impacts the blood glucose responsedemonstrating a lower response with a 20-percent replacement.

A positive evaluation by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) may lead to a health claim approval by the Commission, the Member States and the European Parliament.
