SACRAMENTO, Calif.Eating dried plums may help manage mild to moderate constipation better than psyllium, according to a new study published in the journal Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics. The findings suggest tasty fruit provides a natural, food-based solution to over-the-counter remedies.

Researchers at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine assessed and compared the effects of dried plums and psyllium in patients with chronic constipation. Forty adult subjects were enrolled in an eight week, single-blind, randomized cross-over study. Participants received a total of 6 grams of fiber from either 50 grams of dried plums (about 5-6) eaten twice a day or 11 grams of psyllium (1 tablespoon psyllium) taken in water twice a day for three weeks each, in a crossover trial with a one-week washout period. Results revealed dried plums were more effective than psyllium for the treatment of mild to moderate constipation, and should be considered as a first line therapy.

Constipation is a common problem that affects up to 20 percent of the worlds population. Nearly 60 million Americans suffer from chronic constipation. Many people are looking for a natural, food-based solution to over-the-counter laxatives and fiber supplements. We were pleased that our research demonstrated that dried plums are safe, palatable and more effective than psyllium for the treatment of mild to moderate constipation," the researchers wrote.
