GOLDEN, Colo.Three new studies using NutraFlora® short-chain fructooligosaccharides (scFOS®) prebiotic fiber (from GTC Nutrition) in the area of immune health were recently published. The first, published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology (2007;13(19):2733-37), compared the efficacy of enteral nutrition in patients with severe acute pancreatitis. Patients receiving prebiotic fiber supplementation had shorter hospital stays, greater immune response and fewer overall complications. The second study examined the effects of scFOS on immunoglobulins in mammary secretions (J Animal Physiol Animal Nutr. 2007;91 (5-6):169-74). Bitches supplemented with scFOS had higher colostrum and milk IgM content without concomitant effect on IgG or IgA. In the final study, researchers identified marker genes for physiological effects of scFOS on a host animal in the small intestine; applying the genes could help clarify the mechanisms of how administration of scFOS impacts immune function. The study appeared in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (2007;55(8)3174-79).
