Wakunaga Promotes Quality of Probiotics
December 18, 2007
MISSION VIEJO, Calif.Wakunaga Probiotics announced it will extend the expiration dates on its major formulas from three to four years, based on extensive stability testing over the past decade. According to the company, many other probiotics are labeled with a much shorter shelf life, and activity dates based off time of manufacture. Instead, Wakunaga (Probiotics.com) uses a pharmaceutical-grade facility dedicated to probiotics, and uses human-strain origin probiotics.
The company also announced Dwight Nance, Ph.D., presented research at Neuroscience 2007 on the efficacy of Wakunaga probiotics in treating gastrointestinal inflammation. In the presentation at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, held in early November in San Diego, Nance reviewed studies showing a proprietary three-strain combination of Wakunaga probiotics (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum and B. longum) may have immuno-stimulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. Nance and his team at the University of California Irvine Medical Center are now investigating the impact of the probiotic combination in patients with ulcerative colitis.
