PHILADELPHIA─Energy drinks are causing concern among health professionals. The excessive caffeine they contain has been linked to elevated heart rates, hypertension, anxiety, headaches and interrupted sleep patterns. In addition, they have been linked to obesity, tooth decay and dehydration. Also, combining alcohol and/or anti-depressants with energy drinks can be hazardous. For an energy boost, experts recommend eating complex carbohydrates, like organic trail mix or a spoonful of peanut butter and a glass of water.
