As the coffee market is highly competitive, manufacturers are constantly looking for new ways to make their coffee stand out. The recently launched R Miguel coffee must take the prize as the most innovative development for a while, being made from coffee beans chewed by monkeys. Meanwhile, an array of drinks have hit the market, showing that health is still the main focus of many companies.
The R Miguel Monkey Parchment Coffee is a new type of high-end coffee recently launched in the US, derived from coffee beans chewed on by rhesus monkeys in India. The monkeys are said to select the ripest coffee beans to eat in their native forests, which they chew on and spit out; the company then picks up these beans for use in its coffee. The monkey enzymes reportedly enhance the flavor of the beans, although they are well rinsed, washed, processed and dried before use. The roasted coffee has a retail price of between $40 and $175. MD Drinks introduced a new type of functional beverage, The Urban Detox in Citrus Prickly Pear flavor, which claims to help rid the lungs and sinuses of airborne pollutants and fight hangovers. The Agualicious Healthy Kids Water, from Waterlicious, is a new bottled water targeted at Hispanic children. The water is presented in a multi-colored striped bottle and is said to focus on the growing obesity problem among Hispanic kids in the US.
