AICR Diet Guidelines Appear to Reduce Cancer Incidence
ROCHESTER, Minn.--Results of a study involving nearly 30,000 womenshow following diet and lifestyle guidelines developed by the American Institutefor Cancer Research (AICR) can reduce a woman's chances of developing cancer.Researchers at the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center analyzed data from 13 years of theIowa Women's Health Study to document how diet impacted cancer risk (CancerEpidemiol Biomarkers Prev, 13:1114-20, 2004). Among the nine AICRrecommendations reviewed were consuming a diet high in vegetables, fruit, wholegrains and beans, maintaining a healthy weight, getting regular physicalactivity and not smoking.
Women who followed one or none of the recommendations had a 35 percent higherrisk of developing cancer than women who followed six or more of the guidelines.Those women who followed one or none of the guidelines also had a 43 percenthigher risk of dying from cancer.
