Astaxanthin Lowers Inflammation

KAILUA KONA, HawaiiAstaxanthin inhibits inflammation, according toresults of a preliminary study supported by Cyanotech Corp. (www.cyanotech.com).

In the double blind study, scientists from an independent research groupadministered astaxanthin (as BioAstin®, from Cyanotech; n=15) or placebo (n=8)for 56 days. Supplementation with astaxanthin reduced systemic inflammation (as measuredby levels of C-Reactive Protein [CRP] in blood serum) by more than 20 percent.Administration of placebo did not reduce CRP levels; there was a statisticallysignificant difference between the two treatment conditions, suggesting BioAstinmay significantly reduce CRP scores.

While highly encouraging, this finding was based on a small sample sizeand, ideally, should be replicated in a larger study, said Gerald R.Cysewski,Ph.D., chairman, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Cyanotech. Consideringrecent literature on the importance of CRP as an indicator of cardiac health, the finding of such a substantial average reduction in CRP after a regimen ofBioAstin is a promising result that deserves further attention. This study addsto the body of research being developed that supports the anti-inflammatoryproperties of BioAstin Natural Astaxanthin. Previous studies have shown thebenefit of using BioAstin for varied inflammation-related conditions, includingrheumatoid arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, joint soreness and sunburn.
