ISTANBUL, Turkey—Chromate®, a niacin-bound chromium complex from InterHealth Nutraceuticals, may improve functional recovery to the diabetic heart after ischemia, according to findings presented at the 2nd International Congress on Food and Nutrition, 2007, held in Istanbul, Turkey.

Type 1 diabetic rats were fed a regular diet or a diet containing Chromate for 30 days; non-diabetic rats served as controls. After 30 days, the rat hearts were isolated, subjected to ischemia and then to 120 minutes of reperfusion. Supplementing the diet with Chromate increased vascular function, blood flow, oxygen and nutrients to the heart, helping to alleviate the effects of ischemia/reperfusion injury in diabetic heart muscle.
