CHICAGOBall Horticultural Co.created a new subsidiary, Chrysantis Inc., designed to develop and market highquality, plantderived specialty ingredients for the dietary supplement andfunctional foods industry. Chrystantis first undertaking is launchingproprietary marigold extracts with a high content of zeaxanthin for use inmaintaining eye health.

Ball has more than 40 years of experience in marigold breedingand in 1998, the company developed a unique high-ratio zeaxanthin-to-luteinmarigold. While a typical marigold carotenoid profile is 80-percent lutein and5-percent zeaxanthin, Chrysantis has a range of proprietary zeaxanthin-luteinmarigolds with profiles from 75-percent zeaxanthin and 5-percent lutein to a50:50 ratio.
