Colostrum May Promote Lean Body Mass in Active Individuals

NEWARK, Del.--In the March journal of Nutrition (17: 243-7, 2001) (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov), a new study reported thatbovine-colostrum supplementation may increase lean body mass in active men and women. During an eight-week, double blind, placebo-controlled trial, 22 men and women who worked out at least three times per week were given 20 g/day of colostrum powder or a placebo (whey powder). Both groups gained weight, but the colostrum group gained muscle while the whey group gained fat. The researchers, led by Jose Antonio, Ph.D., from the University of Delaware, surmised that muscle growth from colostrum may be due to a variety of factors, including the supplement increasing the body's growth hormone, IGF-1.
