LOUISVILLE, Ky.D.D. Williamson (DDW) awarded four students from Ohio State University for winning the companys 3rd annual Student Coloring Competition at the 2013 Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Food Expo.

The winning poster, presented by Gregory Sigurdson, Erica Cramer, Quynh Duong and Renee Leber, demonstrated a multi-colored, extruded breakfast cereal using DDWs naturally derived alternatives to FD&C synthetic (certified) food color additives.

We decided to formulate something with natural colorants to make it as vibrant as possible to still be appealing to children," Sigurdson said. The team was able to blend natural colorings stable in extrusion heat for replicating synthetic hues prior to enhancing with the sucrose coating, "which obviously made it much brighter and [made] the color more intense," Sigurdson said.

The Institute of Food Technologists also announced student winners for IFTSA & Undergraduate Research Competition, the IFTSA College Bowl Competition and the Chapter of the Year Awards.
