MUNICHA group of world-renowned experts met in Schloss Hohekammer, Germany, for the Lutein and Its Benefits to Eye Health meeting, where they presented the latest research on lutein and confirmed the carotenoid is deposited in the retina and is vital for eye health. According to this congress of experts, lutein makes its way to the macula and lens, where it acts as internal sunglasses and protects the eyes from light-induced oxidative damage.

Scientists are motivated by the rising incidence of age-related eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is the leading cause of irreversible blindness among elderly people in developed nations. Epidemiological evidence links the benefits of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin to improving eye health. Research shows lutein absorbs blue light and acts as a filter that may reduce photochemical damage caused by short wavelength visible light. Further, consuming lutein and zeaxanthin through dietary sources or food supplements can increase macular pigment optical density (MPOD) in human eyes. And studies suggest that higher levels of MPOD are associated with a decreased risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and improved visual function.

The meeting was sponsored by DSM Nutritional Products Europe Ltd. and Kemin Industries, Inc., partners in offering FloraGLO® brand lutein to the natural health industrythe ingredient is made by Kemin and commercialized worldwide by DSM. FLoraGLO is made for use in supplements, as well as functional foods and beverages.
