Flora Developing Benzene Testing Method

GRANTS PASS, Ore.--The Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded a contract to Flora Research Laboratories to develop an analytical testing method for testing consumer products for benzene contamination. The move follows increased awareness of the possibility that a range of foods, including carbonated beverages and some dietary supplements, may contain benzene, a carcinogen. James Neal-Kababick, laboratory director at FRL (www.floraresearch.com), approached ODS after reviews of current testing methodology revealed the test protocols themselves could form benzene during analysis.
