Gencor, ChromaDex in New Private Label Products

DUNKIRK, N.Y.Star PhytoNutrients, a private label beverage maker has made agreements with both ChromaDex Inc. and Gencor Nutrients to use their ingredients and processing techniques in upcoming product launches. As private label brands are being marketing as premium products, many manufacturers are adding branded ingredients creating opportunities for untapped markets.

Earlier this year, Mintel reported the private label market has been growing recently and it has no signs of slowing. Research found 44 percent of grocery shoppers believe store brand products are of better quality today than they were five years ago, and 39 percent say they would recommend a store brand product.

pTeroPure®, a pterostilbene ingredient from ChromaDex Inc.,  will be used in Star PhytoNutrients products. The Star PhytoNutrients division of Cott Beverages Inc., a subsidiary of Cott Corporation, develops and markets value-added botanical, fruit, antioxidant and highly functional ingredients, specializing in juice concentrates, fruit powders, and fruit extracts for use in food, beverages, nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals.

And Star PhytoNutrients licensed patents owned by Rutgers University from Gencor Nutrients Inc. U.S. patent numbers 6,608,102 and 6,720,353 cover among other things, the use of certain Cranberry extracts for urinary tract health and support, in products such as dietary supplements, functional foods and beverages. The Rutgers patents focus on the antimicrobial effect of bacterial adhesion prevention associated with phytonutrients found in Cranberry fruit and juice.
