GORZÓW, PolandAthletes on the Polish rowing team who supplementation with superoxide dismutase (SOD) extract (as GliSODin® distributed in North America by PL Thomas, Morristown, NJ) had higher antioxidant statuses and less inflammation than those who received a placebo in a recent study (Int J Sport Nutr Exerc Metab. 2011 Apr;21(2):124-34). This study brings more credibility to sports nutrition supplements that include GliSODin.

The double blind study included 19 members of the Polish rowing team who were participating in a preparatory camp. Subjects were randomly assigned to the supplemented group (n=10), who received 2 capsules (500 mg) of GliSODin extract once daily for six weeks or the placebo group (n=9). At the beginning and end of the study, subjects performed a 2,000-meter maximum-effort test on a rowing machine.

After supplementation, SOD activity, a marker for antioxidant status, was significantly higher (P =0.0037) in the supplemented group than the placebo group, and C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker for inflammation, was significantly lower (P=0.00001) in athletes receiving GliSODin than those in the placebo group.

Francois Vix, president of Isocell, the owner of the GliSODin® product, noted, The C-reactive protein level differences between GliSODin®-protected subjects and the placebo group were quite remarkable, with CRP being an important measure of muscle inflammation. The higher levels of SOD, after strenuous exercise in the dosed group, are a positive measure of broad human health."

Previous studies have shown GliSODin protects against oxidative stress, cognitive impairment and ultraviolet (UV) damage.

GliSODin® is patented and trademarked by Isocell, Paris, France; it is available in North America as a nutritional raw material exclusively from PL Thomas.
