Grifron Pro D-Fraction Has Cytotoxic Effect

VALHALLA, N.Y.--A dose-response in-vitro study shows that a bioactive beta-glucan preparation from maitake mushroom may have a cytotoxic effect on prostatic cancer cells, leading to apoptosis (programmed cell death). The study, conducted at the Department of Urology, New York Medical College, was published in Molecular Urology (1:7-13, 2000). Researchers used various concentrations of Grifron Pro D-fraction, a patented maitake extract from Maitake Products, to treat human prostate cancer cells. The study found that almost complete cell death was attained in 24 hours with GD greater than 480 mcg/mL. Combinations of GD in a concentration as low as 30 to 60 mcg/mL plus 200 mg vitamin C were as effective as GD alone at the previous level.

Researchers said the bioactivebeta-glucan presumably acts through oxidative stress to cause apoptosis in prostatic cancer cells. "Therefore, this unique mushroom polysaccharide may have great potential as an alternative therapeutic modality for prostate cancer," the researchers concluded.
