LA MIRADA, Calif.Green Wave Ingredients (GWI) predicts supplies of creatine monohydrate, an ingredient used to formulate numerous bodybuilding products, may become scarce due to strong market demand and limited global production.

According to U.S. Customs Service, the volume of creatine imports for the first two quarters of 2013 indicate a 23-percent increase compared to the same period last year. In addition, price points are on the rise, with an average increase of 8 percent to 10 percent.

One U.S. distributor is taking an aggressive approach to alleviate this potential shortfall.

"We're working closely with the top three manufacturers in China," said Jim Schultz, CEO of Green Wave Ingredients (GWI). "We've already imported more than 800 metric tons of creatine this year, and we have reserved a substantial amount through Q-4. Our collaboration with the manufacturers overseas has enabled us to maintain a consistent supply while offering ultra-competitive pricing."

GWI regularly stocks more than 200 products, including many formulated with creatine, such as branch chain amino acids, taurine, L-glutamine and L-arginine AKG.

Previous research indicates creatine may improve muscle strength in adults with osteoarthritis, and also in patients with fibromyalgia.
