KANTVIK, FinlandA new study in Clinical Nutrition found probiotics helped maintain respiratory health in healthy adults, reducing cold-like symptoms by 27 percent.

In "Probiotic supplementation for respiratory and gastrointestinal illness symptoms in healthy physically active individuals," Australian researchers studied 465 subjects who either received HOWARU® Protect Adult, HOWARU® Protect Sport (from DuPont Nutrition & Health) or a placebo (Clin Nutr. Oct 2013). Daily supplementation with Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis Bl-04TM (HOWARU® Protect Adult) for five months reduced the risk of upper respiratory tract illness (URTI) by 27 percent. Subjects also experienced a delay of upper respiratory symptoms of several weeks.

A significant delay in the onset of symptoms indicates that this probiotic strain may help active adults stay healthy longer," said professor Allan Cripps, pro-vice chancellor, health at Griffith University and the principal scientist of the study.

Subjects who received Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis Bi-07TM and Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM® (HOWARU® Protect Sport) supplementation experienced a higher level of physical activity. Researchers noted the group "undertook significantly more physical activity (8.5%; 6.7%10%; P < 0.003) than the placebo group."

According to Didier Carcano, health platform leader, DuPont Nutrition & Health, These results reinforce our existing documentation on probiotic solutions for immune health and open new opportunities for the HOWARU® Protect range."
