With National Eye Care Month in January, Dr. Andrew Weil suggested on his website that readers ensure theyre getting enough lutein in their diet. Together with the complementary carotenoid zeaxanthin, lutein forms the macular pigment, absorbing potential harmful ultraviolet rays. As such, this may protect against the development of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Dr. Weil noted good sources of lutein include fruits such as mangoes and watermelon, and vegetables including corn, sweet potatoes and dark leafy greens. Zeaxanthin can be found in corn, honeydew melon and orange bell peppers.
