National Starch and Chemical Names Sarah Britton As Recipient of the First William H. Powell Scholarship
April 26, 2007
BRIDGEWATER, NJThe National Starch and Chemical Foundation announces that Sarah Britton is the recipient of the first William H. Powell Scholarship.
A graduate of the Ranelagh School in Bracknell, England, Sarah is a student at the University of Southampton, where she is majoring in medicine. During her secondary school years, Sarah participated in an array of extracurricular activities, many of which related to the medical field. These included the Red Cross, serving as an Alzheimers helper, and assisting on the geriatric and childrens wards in a hospital. She also earned the Life Support, Rapid Response and Medlink certifications through various training programs.
Sarah is the daughter of Martin and Shân Britton of Bracknell; her father is an employee at National Adhesives in nearby Slough.
William Powell, Nationals former chairman and CEO, created the William H. Powell International Scholarship Program to support the college, university or technical school-bound children of Nationals employees outside the United States. With five National-sponsored scholarship opportunities available in the U.S., I felt it was time for the companys international employees to have a dedicated scholarship program of their own, said Powell, who is privately funding the program. Powell is a resident of Princeton, NJ.
The program awards a single $3,000 scholarship based on the applicants past academic performance, future potential, leadership, participation in school and community activities, work experience, and other criteria. The award is not need-based, meaning that the financial standing of the applicants family is not included in the judging criteria. A new scholarship recipient will be selected each year, and each recipient may renew their award for up to four years during their undergraduate education.
