A recent study out of the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, shows that men, especially, can benefit from daily consumption of fruits and vegetables. The study, published in the Dec. 2006 edition of Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention (http://cebp.aacrjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/15/12/2445), indicates that consumption of six or more servings of fruits and vegetables decreased the risk of renal cell cancer in men. According to the American Cancer Society, renal cell cancer accounts for more than 9 out of 10 cases of kidney cancer.

Using a food-frequency questionnaire, researchers assessed the dietary intake of 88,759 women every two to four years from 1980 to 2000, and 47,828 men from 1986 to 2000. The researchers recorded a total of 248 (132 women and 116 men) renal cell cancer cases over the course of the assessment period. The consumption of fruits and vegetables was associated with a decreased risk of renal cell cancer in men, but not in women.
