HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, Canada--Ocean Nutrition Canada(ONC) (www.ocean-nutrition.com) introduced a marine-based, naturaldietary supplement ingredient, Respondin, which works toenhance the immune system. It comes from a unique strain of green microalgaecalled Chlorella pyrendoidosa. According to ONC, Respondin iscategorized as an immune response modifier (IRM) and has the ability to boostweak immune systems in times of immune stress, such as during influenza or thecommon cold. In other instances, such as when the immune system is hyperactive(e.g. allergies), IRMs calm it. The ingredient was tested by research teams atDalhousie University, Halifax, and ONC, and was found to elevate antibody levelsassociated with the influenza vaccine in people 50 to 55 years of age, accordingto ONC. The study was published in the July 2003 issue of the CanadianMedical Association Journal (169:111-17, 2003).
