Olive Extract Protects Against Skin Cancer

SAN FRANCISCO--In an independent study conductedby Argus Research in Horsham, Pa., and presented at the Phytomedicine Society inlate March, an olive extract (as HIDROX, a hydroxytyrosol extracted fromorganic olive juice) appeared to protect against ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Ina lab animal model, researchers administered oral or topical olive extract (asOlivenol from Hayward, Calif.-based CreAgri, which also makes HIDROX) in dosesof 100 mg/kg/d to 100 hairless mice. Results indicated there was a statisticallysignificant, dose-dependant effect against UVR-induced cutaneous inflammationover 31 days, although the topical application was found to be more effective.

According to Roberto Crea, Ph.D., chief scientist at CreAgri (www.creagri.com),"We are very pleased with these results, and we are confident that ongoingresearch on CreAgri's Olivenol products will prove additional anti-inflammatorybenefits in relation to skin and joints, as well as other health benefits."
