Pycnogenol Lowers Glucose Levels in Type II Diabetics

HILLSIDE, N.J.The extract of French maritime pine bark extract (asPycnogenol from Natural Health Science) may help lower blood glucose levelsand make blood vessels healthier in Type II diabetics, according to a studypublished in the March issue of Diabetes Care (27, 3:839, 2004).

The open, controlled study followed 30 Type II diabetics between the ages of28 and 64 for 12 weeks. After participating in a month-long diet and exerciseprogram, subjects were supplemented 50 mg/d of Pycnogenol for three weeks,followed by 100 mg/d of Pycnogenol for three weeks, then 200 mg/d of Pycnogenolfor three weeks, and finally 300 mg/d of Pycnogenol for three weeks.Measurements of postprandial glucose and insulin were taken after each treatmentperiod.

Fasting blood glucose was lowered dose dependently; however, doses rangingfrom 200 mg/d to 300 mg/d of Pycnogenol did not further decrease blood glucose.The maximum decrease of postprandial glucose was observed with 200 mg/d ofPycnogenol to 10.07 mmol/L.
