Red Clover Isoflavones May Halt Prostate Cancer

VICTORIA, Australia--Supplementation with redclover isoflavones may slow or even stop the progression of prostate cancer,according to researchers at Monash University. Their non-randomized, non-blindedtrial--which was published in the December issue of Cancer EpidemiologyBiomarkers & Prevention (11, 12:1689-96, 2002) (http://cebp.aacrjournals.org)--involved38 patients with diagnosed prostate cancer. Before surgery, 20 of the subjectswere given 160 mg/d of red clover isoflavones (genistein, daidzein, formononetin,biochanin A). Specimens taken from men in the treatment group exhibitedsignificantly higher apoptosis compared to those from the control group, andsubjects did not report adverse events related to treatment.
