Saw Palmetto May Combat Cancer

TAMPA, Fla.--Dr. Abraham Mittelman, associate professor of medicine at New York MedicalCollege in Valhalla, presented research that saw palmetto might stymie cancer cells.According to Mittelman, PC-SPES, which consists of eight Chinese herbs and saw palmetto,work together to attack cancer. "What happens with the tumor is that it commitssuicide," he said. "There is still a great deal unknown about PC-SPES but it iseffective."

This information was presented in March at an American Cancer Society discussion onalternative medicine. More study is needed to determine the long-term effects and theproper dosage, and Mittelman is currently seeking approval for a small clinical trial.
