MIGDAL-HAEMEQ, IsraelProviding elderly adults with phosphatidylserine (PS) containing omega-3 essential fatty acids may positively impact cognition and memory, according to a new study (Clin Interv Aging. Nov 2010;5:313-16. DOI: 10.2147/CIA.S13432). For the pilot study, Enzymotec researchers recruited eight elderly volunteers with subjective memory complaints. The subjects received PS-omega-3 (as SharpThoughts, containing Sharp-PS® GOLD from Enzymotec) daily for six weeks; cognitive abilities were tested using the Cognitive Drug Research test battery.

After six weeks, daily consumption of PS-omega-3 resulted in a 42 percent increase in the ability to recall words in the delayed condition. The researchers concluded the compound may favorably effect memory, and serve as a safe alternative to PS extracted from bovine cortex.

"The key finding of this study indicates that Sharp-PS GOLD may have a beneficial effect on the ability to store, hold and retrieve information," said Sigalit Zchut, Ph.D., head of R&D in Enzymotecs bio-functional ingredients and active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) division. "Enzymotec continues to invest in both financial and human resources in order to support the clinical efficacy of the company's products. This study is one among several studies conducted by Enzymotec."
