SPINS Reports Clif Bar Has Top Selling Bars

SAN FRANCISCO--SPINS/ACNielsen, a market research firm based here, reported that Berkeley, Calif.-based Clif Bar Inc.'s original Clif Bar and its relatively new counterpart, the LUNA bar [introduced in May, 1999], are the top two brands sold in natural food stores. Luna leads with a 17 percent market share; the original Clif Bar claims 13 percent.

According to SPINS, Clif Bar Inc. also has the four best-selling energy bar flavors in its stable. They are all LUNA flavors--Chocolate Pecan Pie, LemonZest, Nutz Over Chocolate and Toasted Nuts `N Cranberry (first sold as "Trail Mix.") Seven Clif Bar flavors were listed in the top 25 best-selling energy bar flavors.

According to SPINS, there are more than 700 types of energy bars sold in natural foods stores, marketed by approximately 100 companies. SPINS also reported that Clif Bar Inc.'s market share is 10 percent higher than that of its nearest competitor. During the first half of this year, the company's products accounted for more than 30 percent of the total energy bar purchases in natural food stores.
