Spirulina Alleviates Allergic Rhinitis

IRVINE, Calif.Ingestion ofspirulina alleviates the effects of allergic rhinitis, according to a studyconducted at the University of California, Davis.

The double blind, randomized, placebocontrolled study involved36 allergic rhinitis patients administered supplemental spirulina (supplied byEarthrise Nutritionals). The researchers found 2 g/d of spirulina provided asignificant reduction in interleuken-4, a compound responsible for production ofimmunoglobulin E (IgE), a mediator of the symptoms of allergic rhinitis.

This is the first time that a nutraceutical has been shownto have beneficial effects on the machinery that causes human allergies, saidEric Gershwin, Ph.D., one of the researchers. While further studies areplanned, we are pleased that spirulina, a material rich in antioxidants andcontaining other important nutrients, has clear potential to help people withallergies.
