MT. LAUREL, N.J.Researchers investigated the effects of AstaReal® astaxanthin on eyestrain induced by accommodative dysfunction. Ten healthy subjects received 6 mg/d of astaxanthin or placebo for 14 days and were then assigned a near visual task for 20 minutes. Accomodative function and subjective symptoms relating to eye strain were measured before and after a ten minute rest period. Accomodative contraction and relaxation time was prolonged after the rest period in the group given AstaReal. The double blind, crossover study conducted at the University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Department of Ophthalmology, Kitakyushu, Japan, showed a significant improvement in the astaxanthin supplemented group over the placebo group.

Charles DePrince, president of Fuji Health Science, said, I see this study area for astaxanthin as representing an opportunity for the nutritional industry. Longer term issues such as AMD have been addressed by the industry as a whole, however, the more immediate and chronic issue of eye fatigue has been ignored. I believe the opportunity exists to broaden the eye care market.
