Study: Krill Oil Lowers Lipids in Mice

OSLOA new study in the European Journal of Nutrition found krill oil to lower lipid levels in mice. The study, "Krill oil versus fish oil in modulation of inflammation and lipid metabolism in mice transgenic for TNF-α," investigated the effects of fish oil and krill oil on lipid homeostasis and inflammation (Eur J Nutr 2012, DOI: 10.1007/s00394-012-0441-2).
Scientists from University of Bergen, Norway, fed mice either a high-fat diet or a diet supplemented with fish or krill oil (Aker BioMarine) for six weeks. The study confirmed fish oil and krill oil are comparable dietary sources of omega-3 fatty acids. In fact, the krill oil mice had lower plasma lipid and cholesterol levels. The research suggests krill oil lowers lipid levels by increasing degradation of fatty acids.
