ANKEY, IowaAccording to the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry, Embria Health Sciences' most recent research showed Epicor appears to support gut health.

The study, " A Dried Yeast Fermentate Selectively Modulates both the Luminal and Mucosal Gut Microbiota and Protects Against Inflammation, As Studied in an Intergraded in Vitro Approach," evaluated the metabolism of EpiCor and its modulating effect on gut microbiota.

According to Dr. Stuart Reeves, director of research and development, Embria Health Sciences, "The gut is extremely important for proper immune health, as the Gut-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (GALT) comprises a large part of the immune system. "The in vitro study used a multi-stage simulator of the human digestive system to understand EpiCor's affect on the immune and digestive systems.

"This really is groundbreaking science, as the prebiotic-like effects we see with Epicor are at a relatively low dose as compared to the much higher doses required for efficacy with more established prebiotic fibers such as FOS or inulin," said Larry Robinson, vice president of Scientific Affairs, Embria Health Sciences.

Results of the study show Epicor appears to support gut health through a variety of mechanisms including  acting  as a prebiotic, which helps explain its mode of action as an immune modulator. Epicor significantly increased the levels of butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) that has been shown to be beneficial for gut immune health. Epicor also significantly increased the levels of beneficial bacteria (bifidobacteria and lactobacilli) over the control, contains mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) and ß-glucans, research has repeatedly demonstrated the beneficial effects of these oligosaccharides for gut immune health.

Embria Health Sciences recently signed gold medalist Christine Rampone, captain of the U.S. women's soccer team, as the company's new spokesperson. Rampone will stress the importance of maintaining a strong immune system by promoting the company's dietary supplement Epicor.
