TUSTIN, Calif.Formulation and manufacturing company Vita-Tech International Inc. have launched its new CinSulin ingredient, a highly concentrated cinnamon extract designed to help maintain healthy blood glucose levels. The ingredient has four U.S. and international patents, in addition to one patent pending, and is backed by human study. According to the company, the ingredient is currently available in the TruNature brand at Costco, but will debut in U.S. Food, Drug and Mass Market retail outlets beginning March 2012.

CinSulin is an aqueous extract, which involves only water, cinnamon and heat during its creation, resulting in a high concentration of cinnamon's soluble, efficacious components; the company's patent pending process removes more undesirable and unwanted whole cinnamon compounds, compared to simple water extraction.

According to Vita-Tech, the ingredient's  10:1 means consumers looking to maintain their blood glucose within the normal range only need to consume two 500 mg CinSulin capsules per day, rather than the equivalent of 10 plain 500 mg cinnamon capsules.

As for supporting research, one meta-analysis (Journal of Medicinal Foods; Sept. 2011) looked at eight previous cinnamon studies from recognized peer-reviewed journals and concluded: The fact that water extracts of cinnamon have (bioactive) activity suggests that these may be preferable in terms of use compared with whole cinnamon . . . as using water extracts of cinnamon achieves the desired blood glucose effects while avoiding the nonpolar constituents that have been linked to deleterious effects (e.g., oral lesions and mutagenicity.)
