GM Bean May Reduce Heart Attack Risk

A genetically modified soya bean that can help  prevent heart attacks has passed the first phase of trials, clearing the way for its possible use in the United States within four years.

Research conducted at the University of South Dakota and published in the Journal of Lipid Research reveals GM soya oil increased the omega-3 index in participants’ blood from an average of 4 percent to 5 percent. Such a change, which was not seen in people taking normal soya oil, would be associated with a drop of about 50 percent in the risk of heart attacks.

Omega-3 fatty acids are found mainly in oily fish such as salmon, trout and fresh tuna. They protect against cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, and help the growth of brain cells in the young.
