Krill Oil Benefits Obesity-Related Disorders

OSLO, NorwayKrill oil has beneficial effects on obesity-related disorders, according to a recent study published in the journal PLoS ONE.
The study by Aker BioMarine researched the suppression of fat accumulation and prevention of weight gain in rats when krill oil was added to a high-fat diet. Researchers from the University of Salento performed the study where they investigated the effect of feeding rats a low-fat diet or a high-fat diet with or without krill oil for 12 weeks. The results reported krill oil has a strong capability to suppress hepatic steatosis induced by a high-fat diet administered to rats. The addition of a low amount of krill oil (2.5%) to a diet containing a large excess of fat (35%) efficiently prevented the accumulation of triglycerides and cholesterol inside rat hepatocytes.
"This study is one of several studies documenting the beneficial effects of krill oil on obesity-related disorders," said study author Lena Burri, Ph.D. "This study, however, reveals further mechanisms behind the beneficial effect of krill oil and describes a beneficial regulation of enzymes involved in lipid metabolism as well as an improved mitochondrial function."
