Omega-9 Oils Replace One Billion Lbs. of Unhealthy Fats

INDIANAPOLISEver since research showing the negative health implications of trans and saturated fatty acids started appearing, the food manufacturing and foodservice industries have been focused on creating products with a healthier fatty acid profile. Dow AgroSciences has announced that, along with an ambitious, industry-wide collaboration, the companys omega-9 oils have helped remove over 1 billion lbs. of saturated and trans fats from the North American diet, not just producing a beneficial nutritional impact on cardiovascular disease risk, but a positive economic impact as well.
Omega-9 Oils , such as those from as Dow AgroSciences NEXERA canola and sunflower seeds, provide naturally stable, trans-fat-free solutions with low levels of saturated fat, and high levels of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat. Since 2006, industry use of omega-9 oils has removed 1 billion lbs. of bad fatstotaling 700 million lbs. of trans fats and nearly 300 million pounds of saturated fatfrom North American diets, saving nearly $200 million for U.S. restaurants along the way. It took a team effort to reach this milestone.
Because of the switch to omega-9 oils, nearly 100 million lbs. less oil is used by the restaurant industry each year. Omega-9 Oils last nearly 75% longer than all the other oils wed been using, remarked Ina Pinkney, Chicago restaurant operator known as the Breakfast Queen of Chicago.
