Prolibra Improves Body Composition

EDINA, Minn.—Adding Prolibra, a patent-pending whey protein fraction from Glanbia Nutritionals, to a weight loss program may bolster fat loss and improve muscle retention, according to a new clinical trial (Nutr Metab. 2008;5:8) (DOI:10.1186/1743-7075-5-8). Researchers from the Minnesota Applied Research Center conducted a randomized, double blind, parallel-arm, 12-week study. Subjects (n=106) reduced their caloric intake by 500 calories per day and consumed Prolibra or an isocaloric ready-to-mix beverage 20 minutes before breakfast and dinner. At the end of the 12 weeks, the Prolibra group lost more weight than the control group, although the amount of weight loss was not significantly different between the groups. However, Prolibra subjects loss significantly more body fat compared to the control subjects from both the completer (P=.03) and responder (P=.02) groups; the ratio of fat to lean loss was much larger for the Prolibra subjects for both completer (3.75 vs. 1.05) and responder (3.39 vs. 0.88) groups. Researchers concluded subjects taking Prolibra lost significantly more body fat and showed a greater preservation of lean muscle compared to the control subjects. Because the Prolibra lost 6.1 percent of their body fat mass and a 5 percent reduction of body fat mass has been shown to reduce the risk of obesity related disease, the result have practical significance.
“Based on the results of this human clinical trial and an earlier trial, Prolibra is fully backed by substantiated claims which can be used to support finished products containing Prolibra,” said Sharon Rokosh, business development manager at Glanbia Nutritionals in Monroe, Wis. “The concept of targeting fat as a key to healthy weight loss has resonated well in focus groups we’ve conducted, and Prolibra’s ability to specifically target fat while retaining lean is now further substantiated with this research.”
